Plaça Major de Vic
The Plaza Mayor or Mercadal de Vic is a monumental arcaded square in the highest part of the old town, or Arriba de Vic.
It is square in shape and is the largest in the city. On all four sides, there is a series of arcades that go all the way around the square. In the middle is a large open, unpaved space where fairs, markets and concerts are held. On the southeast side we find the town hall, a Gothic building with a bell tower dating from 1388. On the southwest side we find the Casa Comella, a modernist palace from the s. XIX. It is here that we find the largest entrance in the square, Calle de Jacint Verdaguer. In the northeast corner, there is another plaza with a statue and a circular bench.
Other buildings of interest in the square are: the Casa Costa, a 20th-century modernist, built in 1906 by the master builder Josep Ylla, is a ground-floor, four-story building that stands out for its large dimensions. The sculptural compositions on the balconies of Pere Puntí and Terra on the first floor represent the four social classes of the time: the peasantry, the nobility, the church and the craftsmen. the Casa Tolosa, baroque (18th century); the Baroque and Renaissance Casa Moixó (16th century); the Beuló House, baroque and Gothic (16th century); and the Casa Cortina, modernist of the XIX.
Among the samples and markets that are held, the Market of the Bouquet, the Vicantic, the Live Music Market, the Gastronomic Exhibition and the Medieval Market stand out. The weekly markets are held on Tuesday and Saturday mornings.
