Museumsquartier
The Musseumsquartier in Vienna
The Museumsquartier (MQ) is a cultural complex located in Vienna, Austria. With its 60,000 m² it is the eighth largest cultural space in the world. It is located in the seventh district of the city.
The construction of the Museumsquartier
The Museumsquartier houses within the complex buildings of both baroque and modern architecture. A vast space was used that had housed the court stables, the work of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and his son Joseph Emanuel. The work began in April 1998 and lasted three years. Its total cost amounted to 150 million euros, being inaugurated in June 2001.
The MQ today
The MQ is home to a wide range of installations, from extensive art museums such as the Leopold Museum and the Mumok (Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, Museum of Modern Art of the Ludwig Foundation Vienna), temporary exhibition spaces for contemporary art such as the Kunsthalle Wien, a dance center -the Tanzquartier-, studios for resident artists and production studios. There are also events such as the Wiener Festwochen (Vienna cultural festival), the Vienna International Film Festival, or the ImPulsTanz Vienna International Dance Festival.
