Bodega La Geria

Bodega La Geria

La Geria is an area of the island of Lanzarote, Canary Islands (Spain), known for the uniqueness of its volcanic landscape. It was used for planting vines for wine production, the Malvasía variety being abundant.

The vines are planted in cones formed in the lapilli, called locally picón, and additionally protected by small dry stone walls. Fruit trees are also planted, like fig trees, in the same way. This type of planting allows plants to more easily root in fertile soil, while the upper lapilli layer reduces evapotranspiration. In addition, the shape of the holes and the additional wall protect the crops from the wind.
