Monumento a la fecundidad or Monumento al Campesino, 1968

Casa-Museo del Campesino was César Manrique’s way to recognise the efforts made by country people from Lanzarote, who faced treacherous conditions in order to bring the land back to life.

The monument shows in an abstract way a farmer with a camel and a donkey. It is made from recycled boat water tanks, iron and cement, all painted white. The 15 meters/50 feet high monument is located in the geographical center of the island.

Casa-Museo del Campesino provides an insight into Architecture, Agriculture, Handicrafts and traditional Gastronomy, topped up by Monumento a la Fecundidad, an avant-garde piece of art used by César Manrique to pay his very own tribute.

César Manrique (Arrecife, Lanzarote, April 24, 1919 / Teguise, Lanzarote, September 25, 1992) was a Spanish painter, sculptor and artist. He combined his work with the defense of the environmental values of the Canary Islands. He sought harmony between art and nature as a creative space. He obtained, among others, the World Prize for Ecology and Tourism and the Europe Prize.
