Kursaal
Kursaal – San Sebastián’s striking modern conference and auditorium complex, designed by Rafael Moneo, overlooking the city’s famous Zurriola Beach.
The Kursaal is a modern architectural complex in San Sebastián, designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo and inaugurated in 1999. It serves as a hub for conferences, concerts, and cultural events, and has become one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.
Architecture & Design
The Kursaal is composed of two translucent glass cubes resting on a stone platform, symbolizing “two rocks stranded at the mouth of the Urumea River.” Its minimalist design contrasts with the city’s Belle Époque architecture, marking a bold step in modern Basque design.
Cultural Role
It is home to the prestigious San Sebastián International Film Festival, along with numerous concerts, exhibitions, and congresses. Its multi-purpose auditorium and conference facilities attract both local and international audiences.
Urban Integration
The building opens toward Zurriola Beach, creating public spaces such as a large plaza and riverside promenade. It has reshaped the city’s cultural and urban landscape, strengthening its reputation as a destination for design and culture.
Awards & Recognition
The Kursaal received the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award in 2001, recognizing its contribution to modern architectural innovation.
