Elogio del Horizonte

Elogio del Horizonte – Eduardo Chillida’s monumental concrete sculpture perched on Gijón’s Santa Catalina hill, framing the Cantabrian Sea through its iconic arch.

The Elogio del Horizonte is a monumental concrete sculpture by Eduardo Chillida, completed in 1989 and installed on Gijón’s Cerro de Santa Catalina. Intended as a frame for the Cantabrian Sea, it has become an enduring symbol of the city.

Origins & Design

Chillida conceived the piece in 1985 and selected its dramatic coastal site, transforming the former military hill into a public landmark. The structure was fabricated using pine formwork and over 14,000 kg of wood planks to shape the concrete mass

Construction Details

Finished on October 30, 1989, the sculpture weighs approximately 500 t and measures around 10 m high, 12 m wide, and 15.5 m long. The concrete mix was specially formulated with aluminosis‑resistant aggregates to balance texture and durability

Inauguration & Public Reception

Opened on June 9, 1990, the piece drew mixed reactions over its cost but has since been embraced as Gijón’s emblem. Locals jokingly dubbed it “King Kong’s toilet,” yet its stark form and expansive views forged a deep connection with the urban landscape

Acoustic Experience

Visitors inside the sculpture often hear the Cantabrian waves amplified—an intentional “shell-like” effect that connects architecture and environment .

Location & Setting

Perched atop the Cerro de Santa Catalina—a former military zone transformed into a public park—the sculpture overlooks the city’s Cimadevilla district and San Lorenzo Beach
