Outside the renowned Abbey Road Studios, the crossing has become a global pilgrimage site for music fans and pop culture enthusiasts.

Origins & Location

Abbey Road was named after the nearby St John’s Wood Abbey and runs through the St John’s Wood district. The area became associated with the Abbey Road Studios, established in 1931.

Beatles Album Cover

On August 8, 1969, The Beatles posed on the zebra crossing for their Abbey Road album cover—John, Paul, George, and Ringo walking across the street one after another. This image is one of the most reproduced in music history.

Tourist Ritual

Today the crossing is pedestrianised by passing traffic stopping as fans line up to replicate the famous pose. Tourists regularly queue to get that perfect shot between white stripes.

Preservation & Listing

In December 2010, the crosswalk was granted Grade II listed status by English Heritage, preserving both the crossing and the nearby road signs in recognition of its cultural significance.

Nearby Landmarks

The area includes Abbey Road Studios—still a working recording studio—and St John’s Wood Church Grounds. Fans can also explore Beatles-themed murals and shopping on nearby streets.
