Balos Lagoon

The Balos lagoon is a lagoon separated from the bay of the same name by a strip of sand that joins the promontory of Corico to Cape Tigani, in the most north-western part of the island of Crete, in Greece. The territory belongs to the municipality of Kissamos in the peripheral unit of Chania.

Its incredible turquoise waters and its beautiful and exotic nature make it one of the favorite destinations of tourists. Both the Balos lagoon and the deeper water area are considered a Natural Park in order to protect its unique fauna and flora, such as Eleonor's hawks or cormorants, which nest in the caves in the area. In addition, it is the refuge of the monk seal and the Caretta Caretta tortoise.
