Skansen

Skansen – the world’s first open-air museum and zoo, nestled on Stockholm’s Djurgården island, where traditional crafts, historic buildings, and Nordic wildlife bring Sweden’s past vividly to life.

Skansen is both the oldest open-air museum and a zoo, situated in Stockholm’s Djurgården. Founded in 1891 by Artur Hazelius, its immersive exhibits preserve Swedish rural life through centuries of history.

Living Heritage & Architecture

Over 150 authentic buildings—ranging from farmhouses to noble residences—were relocated from across Sweden and meticulously reconstructed here, offering an immersive window into rural and urban traditions.

Crafts, Traditions & Events

On-site artisans in historic attire demonstrate woodworking, glassblowing, baking, and other traditional crafts. Seasonal programs include folk music, dancing, a Midsummer celebration, and a Christmas market dating back to 1903

Nordic Wildlife & Zoo

The museum’s zoo features native species like moose, lynx, brown bear, reindeer, and more—plus domestic breeds and a children’s petting zoo, making it a unique blend of cultural and natural heritage

Historic Funicular

The Skansens Bergbana, a funicular railway inaugurated in 1897, still operates today—offering a swift, nostalgic ascent through part of the park
