Lovrijenac
Lovrijenac – Dubrovnik’s “Fort of St. Lawrence,” dramatically perched on a cliff above the Adriatic, guarding the city for centuries.
Lovrijenac, also known as St. Lawrence Fortress, is a striking defensive fortification located on a 37-meter-high cliff outside Dubrovnik’s western walls. It has played a key role in the city’s maritime defense since the Middle Ages and is now one of its most emblematic landmarks.
Historical Significance
Dating back to at least the early 14th century, Lovrijenac was built to repel Venetian attacks and secure Dubrovnik’s independence. Its thick walls and strategic location made it nearly impenetrable.
Architecture & Layout
The fort features a triangular floor plan with three terraces, massive stone walls up to 12 meters thick, and a prominent inscription above its gate reading “Freedom is not to be sold for all the treasures in the world.”
Cultural Role Today
In addition to being a tourist attraction, Lovrijenac serves as a venue for cultural events, including performances during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Its dramatic backdrop has also made it a filming location for productions such as Game of Thrones.
UNESCO Context
Lovrijenac is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing Dubrovnik’s Old City, recognized for its outstanding medieval architecture and fortified urban ensemble.
